Harvest Time at Xaragall: Year 1 and Year 2 Pupils Learn by Stomping Grapes

Primary year 1 and 2 pupils experienced the grape harvest firsthand, following the journey from vine to grape juice and even stomping grapes with their bare feet.

On 30 September, the Year 1A, Year 1B, Year 2A and Year 2B classes visited Xaragall (Llinars del Vallès) to learn about the grape harvest process and discover how grapes are transformed into grape must. Surrounded by nature, the children explored where grapes come from, the different parts of the vine, the varieties of grapes that exist and the time of year when they are harvested.

Then came the highlight of the day! The pupils separated the grapes from the stems and, with their shoes off, stomped on them in a traditional harvesting container, sharing plenty of laughter and excitement along the way. They then pressed the juice, filtered it to remove any remaining particles and tasted grape must prepared by the centre’s professionals.

The children also learned the technical names of the machines used throughout the process and completed an activity booklet about everything they had learned and experienced during the visit. Each class took home a bottle of its own grape must to observe how its colour and aroma change as fermentation takes place over time. The staff at Xaragall were welcoming, knowledgeable and highly professional, encouraging the children to take an active role in every stage of the experience.

A fun and memorable day of learning, experimentation and discovery, helping pupils better understand the origins of the food and products we enjoy every day.
