Our School

El Pinar de Nuestra Señora owes its existence, first and foremost, to God. It was He who placed in the soul of our Mother María de Jesús Velarde the longing to consecrate her life to Him, and who instilled in her soul the dream of a school.

So the history of El Pinar de Nuestra Señora begins with our founder: Mother María de Jesús. She started by giving classes to a small group of girls in a house on Carrer Mariné, in this city, Sant Cugat del Vallès.

That small group grew so much that the need arose to move to a larger space. She found a spot among the pine trees, and so on 17 October 1954 the foundation stone of the current school "El Pinar de Nuestra Señora" was blessed. That same afternoon there were 17 children; the following day, at the first class, there were 22; and the first school year ended with 48 pupils. Today it has more than 1,100 students from Early Years through to Sixth Form and Vocational Training.

Mother María de Jesús Velarde

She was born on 9 April 1925 in Santander, and grew up in a religious and wealthy family, being the youngest of four siblings. She spent her childhood in Madrid and later moved to Barcelona, where she continued her secondary school studies. From the age of 14, she felt a clear vocation towards religious life. She studied Philosophy and Arts at the University of Barcelona, specialising in General History, and received an Extraordinary Prize in 1951.

On 26 October of the same year she entered the Congregation, setting aside a future of great professional opportunities. She became a key figure in the Novitiate, thanks to her spirituality and personality.

Over time she became Mother Superior and, in due course, God guided her to found a new Religious Institution within the Church: The Daughters of Saint Mary of the Heart of Jesus.

Our Identity

Our school's primary aim is to provide a well-rounded, balanced and coherent education inspired by the values of Christian humanism and the teachings of the Catholic Church. We see education as a process of guiding each pupil's spiritual, personal, intellectual and social development, preparing them for life and for responsible participation in society.

The development of a well-balanced personality.

Openness to spiritual values and the formation of a strong moral conscience.

Respect, friendship, cooperation and a spirit of service.

A commitment to justice and social equality.

The development of creativity, artistic sensitivity and an appreciation of culture.

We believe that religious education, adapted to each stage of development, together with a personalised and active approach to learning, is essential in fostering:

Intellectual and creative development.

Effective communication and self-expression.

Emotional well-being.

A strong sense of duty and responsibility.
