The Pinar Choir was born at Christmas 2014, with the desire to bring the joy and hope of the newborn Jesus to everyone, everywhere. Back in December 2010, a group of Year 5 Primary pupils — full of enthusiasm but short on resources — took part for the first time in the Cadena 100 Christmas Carol Competition, and were selected to be broadcast on air during that Christmas season.
Not long afterwards, as El Pinar was proving too small to contain so much Christmas spirit, the choir made its first appearance at the National Christmas Carol Festival, held in Santo Domingo de la Calzada in La Rioja. From that moment on, every effort was made to ensure the activity ran throughout the full academic year, with the choir participating in concerts, festivals and competitions across Spain — in cities including Barcelona, Toledo, Madrid, Logroño and Murcia — winning prizes and recognition for the outstanding work carried out by pupils and
teachers alike.
The Choir takes part every year in the RTVE programme "La Missa" (The Mass), and blending styles — sometimes more technically refined, other times more relaxed and fresh — has collaborated, among others, with the Sant Cugat Symphony Orchestra, the group Colectivo Panamera, and Luispo.
What most defines the Choir, however, are its Christmas carols — original compositions by its director, Francisco Javier Domínguez. These are bespoke songs that capture, with joy and enthusiasm, an authentic and simple Christmas, reaching audiences everywhere through the YouTube channel and, since December 2024, on music platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and Prime Music.
The Choir rehearses regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, directed by teacher Javier, accompanied on piano by teacher Ònia Suz, and with the invaluable regular collaboration of Albert Mañosa, Daniel Polo and Jaume Sanclemente.
Nearly a hundred pupils, from Year 3 of Primary to Year 12 (2nd year of Sixth Form), take part in rehearsals and termly performances, both locally and nationally, with Christmas being the highlight of every academic year.
The school community, families and former pupils play an important role in the life of the Choir,
helping out wherever needed and turning this corner of El Pinar into one big family.
El Pinar is too small to celebrate Christmas — everyone takes part and everyone is invited!
We don't only have studio recordings: live performances at concerts and competitions throughout the year are an indispensable tool for musical formation and learning.
Every year we take part in the RTVE programme "La Missa", singing live on television.
One of the most enriching and enjoyable experiences has been the recording of the music video
and song "Un río que se va" with Nacho Taboada, lead vocalist of Colectivo Panamera.
Our first collaboration with Luispo — "Sia vostra gran puresa" — with original music by the
singer-songwriter, recording voices and instruments at the Monastery of Sant Cugat.
